Good Reading Sniffed Out on the Web by Surfer Dog:

FORETHOUGHT CAN HELP WHEN A BELOVED DOG LOSES ITS WAY
by Maryanne Dell, Orange County Register

A bit of a brouhaha was raised recently by a little dog
named Gizmo. Gizmo was a lost Shih-Tzu who was taken to
Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach, where
he was mistakenly identified as a Lhasa apso, then
adopted out. By the time his owner, Carol Soden, found
out what had happened (she was out of town when much of
this was going on), Gizmo was in his new home, and
the shelter wouldn't give Soden the new owners' names.

THE WATCHDOG'S WATCHDOG: Unique Program Fights Dog Abuse
	by Jan M. Faust, ABCNEWS.com

Even in her uniform, the five-foot three-inch Annemarie
Lucas is not an imposing figure. That extra nine millimeters
she carries on her right hip, however, goes a long way
toward boosting her authority. From a distance, you’d
assume Lucas is a cop. It’s only when you make out the
insignia on her shoulder patch that you realize she is
something quite rare -- an agent with the Humane Law
	Enforcement squad.

SOME LITTLE GROWTHS YOU MAY WANT TO HAVE REMOVED
	by Dr. David T. Roen

Women seem to do exceptionally well in veterinary medicine. I
would say almost all veterinary technicians are women, and I
think more than 60 percent of current veterinary graduates
are women. Almost all of my employees are women. Why is this?
I am biased towards hiring women, not only because they're
fun to work with, but because women are not afraid to be soft,
sympathetic, and understanding towards clients and their concerns.

In all areas except one, that is. My female employees have
almost always displayed an inordinate enthusiasm for
castrating male dogs and cats. (Worries me a little sometimes.)

IS YOUR DOG CHEWING YOU OUT OF HOUSE & HOME?
by Ian Dunbar PhD, MRCVS, Surius Puppy Training

Dogs chew out of necessity, boredom, anxiety, or enjoyment.
Puppies especially have a strong urge to chew, both to relieve
the irritation and inflammation of teething and also, to
investigate their surroundings. There are only so many things
your puppy can do when left at home alone. It can hardly watch
the soaps on the TV, or read a novel!

WATCH OUT FOR FOUR-LEGGED MONSTERS THIS HOWL-O-WEEN

DAYTON, Ohio -- Halloween is just around the corner,
and if you think you've got everything under control -- think again!
What about Fluffy and Fido? If your four-legged friend
is truly a member of the family, then she needs treats and a
costume too. Halloween can be fun for your pets, as long as you
follow a few simple guidelines.
"Taking time to 'treat' your dog or cat properly on Halloween
can be a great bonding experience for you and your pets," says Dr.
Dan Carey, DVM, Director of Technical Communications at The
Iams Company. "The key is knowing how to celebrate and include
your pet, while always keeping his health and well-being in mind."

Halloween Pet Dress Code -- Dos and Don'ts
-- Do dress your pet in something that allows her to move
and breathe easily (the Godzilla head is out).
-- Do watch your pet closely for chewing or discomfort when
dressed up.
-- Don't dress your dog or cat in anything decorated with
loose or small objects.
-- Don't put anything on your pet that may trail on the
ground and get caught up in his feet.
-- Don't dress your pet in anything that would cause him to
become over-heated. Remember, he's already wearing a thick fur coat.
-- Don't force your pet into a costume. Remember, it's
supposed to be fun! If your dog doesn't want to be a fairy,
don't force the issue.

The Trick to Treating Your Pet
Candy and chocolate can be harmful, even toxic, to dogs and
cats. And if they could talk, they would probably ask for meaty
treats over chocolate anyway. "Pets' nutritional needs are very
different from those of humans. Because dogs and cats have
simple, short intestines, they thrive on meat-based
products -- not on sugar," says Dr. Carey.

    Pet Halloween Horrors
Watch out for these pet horrors at Halloween:
-- Candy wrappers -- keep these away from your pet. If ingested,
contact your veterinarian immediately.
-- Open doors -- make sure you keep your pet from slipping
by your feet when trick-or-treaters call.
-- Trick-or-treaters -- make sure any nervous dogs or cats
that would be disturbed by strange ghosts and goblins at the
door are tucked away safely in the house.

Giant Cane Toads
----------------
TOXIC TOADS DEADLY FOR DOGS
They are huge, they are slimy, and they can kill your pet.
Giant Cane Toads are making the residents of a Palm Harbor, Fla.,
neighborhood hopping mad.
On one street, two dog breeders say they have killed 17
of the giant toads in the past few days. The amphibians can cause
rashes on humans but they can be deadly when they come in contact
with cats or dogs.
Cane Toads are very large and heavily built amphibians
(up to 15 cm long) with warty skin. Females tend to be larger
and smoother-skinned than males. Cane Toads are olive-brown to
reddish-brown on top, with a paler white or yellowish belly.
The underside is usually flecked with brown.
The most distinctive features of the Cane Toads are
bony ridges over each eye and a pair of enlarged glands, one on
each shoulder. These glands are able to ooze Cane Toad venom.
They were imported to Florida decades ago to control
agricultural pests. They are a major problem in Australia, where
they were imported to in 1935 from the natural populations
existing in South America.
If your dog or cat comes into contact with the toads, the
poison may cause their mouth to foam.
You should wash their mouth out with water immediately and
then take the pet to your vet.
If handling a Cane Toad, it is important to wash your hands
immediately afterwards and to be careful not to touch your eyes.
If any venom does affect the eyes, bathing in running water will
 relieve the pain.
The toads are formally known as Bufo Marinus. The toads
mostly come out at night and in the early morning.
They are considered a pest and extermination is allowed.

MOST PET WEB SITES DON'T WANT TO MAKE EXTRA DOLLARS
... BUT if you are one that does...

Put up links at your dog site that produce commissions
for you without extra work and while providing a
helpful service from a well-respected Internet firm. We
have compared and contrasted more than 30 firms
delivering similar services; AIS is the one we'll stand
behind. They're professional, have integrity, are
trustworthy and their products are excellent. Your
site can earn, for example, a generous US $175.00
every time one of your site visitor's signs up for
AIS credit card services. Or $15 if someone signs
up for their $35/month real-time online credit card
processing service (plus monthly residuals). In
comparison to others, that's a steal and even more
so when one considers the features they provide.
Consider it for your dog site -- a search keyword
that is routinely one of the top 100 entered into
search engines.

Or, if you want to begin accepting credit
cards at your canine web site, then check out
AIS services. No application fee. 98.5% approval.
We comfortably recommend them.

Hello:
Hope you'll join us at the online discussion forum for
Canine Times. Now that the bulk of work on our
firm's website has been completed, we can focus much
more time on getting good conversation going in the
forum. We've published in the business section a
question that many in the pet business would love to
have input on from the dog-owning public. As the
internet is yet a frontier, here is your chance to
provide input that can guide the future. Don't
hesitate, though, to begin other conversations.
Let the talk begin!
