Good Reading Sniffed Out on the Web by Surfer Dog:

**LOUSY EXCUSES FOR GETTING RID OF A PET
        Customarily, this section features online articles. But
        this page was irresistible. Here you'll find a lengthy
        list of the reasons proffered by various pet owners on
        why they had to move the dog out. Many may think that the
        reasons must fall into one of the obvious categories.
        But how about: "He stands in front of the TV too much."
        Or: "We had to get rid of the truck the dog was chained
        to." You can add reasons you have heard. And I will
        refrain from comment on the state of some pockets of the
        human race.

** FIDO SHOULD BE BUCKLED UP IN CAR
        by Linda Goldston
        Copyright July 1999 San Jose Mercury News

        It's time that driving Ms. Pooch got a lot safer.
        Consider: In 1990, a woman was taking her golden
        retriever to Dr. Marty Smith's office in Wisconsin when
        the pup jumped down on the foot pedals, causing the
        driver to smash into the clinic. The impact was so hard
        that all but two feet of the car ended up inside the
        building.

MIXED REVIEWS ON STORING YOUR DOG'S DNA
        Should you or shouldn't you clone your dog?
        A year ago, the decision couldn't even have been on your
plate of possibilities.
        But since Oct 1998, PerPETuate Inc.,Farmington,
Conn.,has been offering a service to pet owners who would
be comforted knowing that one day, perhaps, their pooch
could be back in their lives -- after death, that is.
        Headed by a veterinarian and an agriculture consultant,
the firm stores DNA from the tissue of live or deceased pets for
use when cloning has been perfected. The tissue is presented to
PetPETuate by the pet owner's veterinarian, who does the sample
collection.
        The fee from PetPETuate is $1000 for one pet, plus a
yearly storage charge of $100.
        However, the science is still young in regard to cloning.
The recent sudden death of a cloned calf has raised questions
about the long-term health effects of cloning. A team
of investigators, led by Dr. Jean Paul Renard of the Units of
Developmental biology and Cellular Biology at IRNA in Jouy de
Josas, France, reported in the May issue of The Lancet that
the death of their cloned calf suggests possible health
complications due to the cloning process.
        Meanwhile, other researchers have discovered that clones
will not only share the same physical traits as their originals,
but also their age.
        If Fido is 10-years-old, that may be worth keeping in
mind.

PROTECT YOUR PET'S LIFE WITH HOME WINDOW STICKERS
        Pet Rescue window stickers for dogs or cats are now
available from card maker Hallmark Cards.
        Prominently displayed in a home's exterior window or
other location, these stickers alert firefighters or other rescue
team members to the presence of pets in the home, including how
many dogs or cats they should be on the lookout for.
        Look for them at any retailer selling Hallmark products.

READER'S COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS:

        CT subscriber Kathleen Appleton emailed saying: "Please
remind readers to use mineral oil in their dog's eyes before
applying the 'skunk-off' solution (CT Issue 58).or, they run the
risk of damaging their beloved pet's eyes. Use two to three
drops per eye." Kathleen is with the Great Pyrenees Rescue
http://www.gpcgc.org/rescue.htm

        Another CT subscriber, a veterinary nurse, emailed
in response to an earlier blurb under the Some Say heading
that recounted words in a holistic medicine book on the use
of garlic as a flea repellant. She said: This much garlic
at every meal is perfectly capable of causing a condition known
as Heinz Body Anemia which is life threatening. Furthermore
garlic has no repellent properties to fleas."
        EDITOR'S NOTE: We are now in our fourth interview on the
concern regarding Heinz Body Anemia. Interviews are being
conducted with veterinarians, veterinary scientists and others.
Literature databases are also being reviewed. The results, so
far, are not conclusive, although large amounts of any substance
are harmful to any living being. We will be carrying a story on
this in a future issue.

DOGS IN THE MIDDLE AGES
http://www.bnf.fr/enluminures/images/jpeg/i5_0018.jpg

For those that love art and history, the national library of
France has online a beautiful illuminated manuscript from the
time of France's King Charles the V (1338-1380). It shows the
King's servants treating royal greyhounds.

Also, visit at the same library:
http://www.bnf.fr/enluminures/themes/t_4/st_4_01/a401_004.htm
where you'll find illuminures on the theme: hunting dogs sniffing
a trail.

Some Background: Before Gutenberg's invention of the printing
press (1450-1455), producing copies of books was completely
manual and performed by skilled craftsmen. The scribe
calligraphed the text and various artists or specialized
artisans decorated the manuscript. The two essential phases of
writing and illuminating, or, in other words, illustrating.
were preceded by a number of preliminary steps : the preparation
of the parchment; the cutting and folding of the sheet; and the
preparation of the writing surface. Books took time to produce
and the end product was invariably costly.

Illumination (illustration) was carried out only after the text
had been applied. The illuminator-illustrator executed the
paintings or "histoires" but only after two of his
lesser colleagues had finished their work. One was the
illuminator in charge of the pen-flourishing (penwork decoration
in colored inks), and the other was the illuminator in charge of
all the painted ornamentation, namely the decorated letters,
borders and frames (vignettes). The time to illuminate a
manuscript depended on the size of the illustrations,
and the long drying periods that followed the application of
each fresh layer of color.

As you view these illustrations, think upon the skill and
time needed to develop each piece -- and the importance of dogs
in our lives even during this time period!

KOSOVA: THE ANIMAL AFTERMATH
         The World Society for the Protection of Animals has
this month begun working with veterinarians in the Kosova
region to distribute medicine and equipment to help animal
casualities of the conflict there.
        Spokespersons for WSPA estimate there were approximately
150,000 dogs in Kosova before the conflict began and most of the
survivors have had to fend for themselves for the past three
months. Packs of dogs have been reported to be running the
streets.
        The packs running through Pristina and other cities have
been spreading diseases and getting so aggressive they were
reportedly causing problems for peacekeeping forces.
        The WSPA relief team sent to Kosova is spending time
there assessing the problem, supervising the construction of
temporary animal shelters and treating and vaccinating animals,
        Humane slaughter equipment has also been taken there for
animals that could no longer be helped.

LATE AUGUST MARKS START OF SHORTENED QUARANTINE
FOR PETS COMING TO HAWAII
        If you're planning a trip or relocation to Hawaii
accompanied by your pet, you may want to schedule it for sometime
after August 23, 1999.
        Despite concern over the impact on its rabies-free
status,Hawaii reduced the quarantine for pets traveling into the
state from the 120 days required for the past 85 years to 30
days.
        And they increased the fees for quarantine,.more than
doubling the cost of a 30-day stay at the Halawa facility over
the next four years
        The first animal to be accepted under the new policy will
occur in late August, 90 days after the rule was signed into
effect on May 23.
        The action came despite concerns that a newly
required rabies blood test is experimental, and that a reduced
quarantine would ruin Hawaii's rabies-free status.
        To qualify for a 30-day quarantine, a pet must meet
certain requirements, including proper vaccinations with an
approved inactivated rabies vaccine, two rabies blood tests (one
conducted prior to arrival, the second conducted upon arrival in
Hawaii), and implantation of a microchip obtained from the state.
        But pet owners will have to put up more money for
quarantine stays. For 30-day stays, the fees will increase in
four steps over the next four years, said Ann Takiguchi,
spokeswoman for the state Department of Agriculture.
        The charge for dogs for 30 days use to be $290. The new
fee, effective July 12, is $555. From late August to July 2000,
the cost will be $655.
        Then the fee will rise to $675 for two years. At that
time fees will be reviewed. The current plan, however, calls for
the last jump to $695 to take place three years from now.

E D I T O R' S  C U B B Y
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Folks:
You may have sent me a happy b-day wish for the 4th of July and
been disappointed that I didn't, at the very least, send a short
response.  Ever receive some 400 plus birthday greetings via
email?   Yikes -- she says with a huge grin and a virtual hug.
Quite frankly, it could have been more than 400.  That's where I
stopped counting!  Thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!  That was a
simply amazing birthday gift! But, please forgive me.  I just
didn't have the stamina to send a response to all of you.  Please
know that I do thank you.. from the bottom of my heart.
The three-day weekend I took for the 4th didn't stop us from
pursuing story ideas for our futures file. We have several
interviews scheduled with contacts at Green Chimney's, a
residential treatment program involving animals and children in
New York.  A wonderful story on a young boy whose life has been
positively changed through his work with a dog there is in
progress for a future issue.  Our excellent writer/journalist,
Claudia L'Engle Hafling will be handling this story.
Additionally, three of you emailed indicating that you had had a
bad pricing experience with Pet Med Express, the pet
pharmaceutical company we covered in a past issue. We have
contacted Pet Med Express, asking for an interview on their
pricing policies.  We have received a phone call from Pet Med. We
will be working on a story on this also.
Those emails triggered an idea. We have noticed that many of you
have interesting things to say about a company's services,
based on your experiences with them.  This is good information,
in our estimation. And we'd like to see it shared with all CT
subscribers.We are in discussion about providing at our site, in
the slowly growing resource section, content listing a
company and its services, combined with CT subscribers
feedback/comments about the company.  Perhaps we can add a script
that will allow a company to be rated?  And perhaps we can add a
script that will enable subscribers to publicly post praise and
suggestions on services in need of improvement.  Your thoughts?
Three more people have sent in financial support for the new CT
resource section, which is to be a private area on our site only
for current CT subscribers.  That brings the total to
approximately $140.  Thank you!!  Offline, we have begun work on
other pages for this section.  We will be honoring those who have
helped fund this new section by listing their names at the site.
For those of you new to CT who do not know what I'm talking
about, you can get up-to-speed by sending any email
to mailto:support@cfnaonline.com
Cheerio!
