***BBC: Evolution Website -- Charles Darwin's writings
This section presents Charles Darwin's thinking on inherited
instincts in domesticated animals -- is there evidence,he pondered,
as to the existence of inherited instincts. "How strongly these
domestic instincts, habits, and dispositions are inherited," he
wrote, "and how curiously they become mingled, is well shown when
different breeds of dogs are crossed. Thus it is known that a cross
with a bull-dog has affected for many generations the courage and
obstinacy of greyhounds; and a cross with a greyhound has given to a
whole family of shepherd-dogs a tendency to hunt hares. "

SUMMER FLYING OFF-LIMITS TO DOGS
On the heels of a new federal ruling requiring
airlines to report the number of animals killed or injured on
flights, major air carriers have announced a "pets can't fly"
policy.
American Airlines, Delta and United have already announced
pets cannot travel in their cargo holds now through the end of
summer. For American Airlines and United that means now through
the end of September 2000. Delta Airline's no-pets-in-cargo policy
ends in August, at this writing.
Pets traveling in cargo holds are checked in as baggage.
Nothing changes at American West or Southwest Airlines, which
have always had a no-pets policy. A Southwest Airlines’ employee
was reported in MSNBC as saying, "We’re not gonna subject them to
what can be very, very hot in that cargo area, or very, very cold.
Only service animals are allowed on board."
Also allowed on board, generally, are small animals that
are not disruptive
While changes can occur, Northwest Airlines is currently
allowing pets to be checked as baggage unless the temperature
exceeds 85 degrees.
The Department of Agriculture reported in 1998 that it had
documented more than 2,500 cases of dogs and cats
"severely affected" by extreme temperatures in cargo holds over a
five-year span, with 108 deaths. Airlines handle about 500,000 dogs
and cats each year.

TEN CITIES RANKED HIGHEST FOR DOG BITES TO LETTER CARRIERS
Of the 2,725 postal employees who were bitten last year, more
were bitten in Houston, Texas, than any other city in the United
States, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
Fifty eight letter carriers were reported bitten by dogs in
Houston during 1999, a number which translates into about 2.1
percent of the 2,725 total.
Next on the list, according to the US Postal Service, is Los
Angeles, Calif., with 38 bites in 1999, followed by Chicago, Ill.,
where 31 letter carriers were reported bitten last year.
Cleveland, Ohio, came in fourth with 27 and Miami, Fla., was
fifth with 27.
The five remaining cities in the top ten list are:
Dallas, Texas -- 26;
Boston, Mass. -- 21;
Detroit, Mich.-- 21;
Denver, Colo. -- 20; and
San Diego, Calif.-- 19.
Postmaster General William Henderson said that the number of dog
bites suffered by letter carriers has decreased by more than 7,000
since 1983.
However, he said, last year, 184 more carriers were victims of
dog bites than in 1998.
"We must remain focused on this issue," he said. "It requires
the effort of entire communities effort to keep our neighborhoods safe
for everyone. That includes not only postal employees but also
children."
In contrast to the nearly 3,000 letter carrier bitten in 1999,
the US Postal Service reported that about 2 million children in
the United States were bitten during the same period.
The Humane Society encourages all dog owners to remember
the following:
*Don't presume your dog won't bite.
*Spay or neuter your dog. Unneutered dogs are three times more
likely to bite.
*When your letter carrier comes to your home, keep your dog
inside, away from the door in another room or on a leash.
*Don't let your child take mail from the letter carrier in the
presence of your dog. Your dog's instinct is to "protect"
the family.
*Obedience training can teach your dog proper behavior and help
you control your dog in any situation.

WEIGHT LOSS KIT FOR DOGS
You know those weight loss programs and packages for
people? Well, now there's something similar for pudgy pooches.
The Fit & Trim Weight Loss Kit is available free by browsing to
http://www.fitandtrim.com or calling 800-FIT-TRIM (800-348-8746),
ext. 130.
The free kit includes a meal plan, progress report, measuring
cup and tape measure to keep track of weight loss, background
information on a recent canine weight managment study and tips on
helping dogs shed excess weight.
The study was conducted by Purina Pet Products(R) and the
North Carolina Sate University College of Veterinary Medicine.
It investigated the impact of feeding Fit & Trim (r) on
overweight dogs during an 8-week program which included a
prescribed feeding schedule, limited treats and exercise sessions.
Study participants noted an increase in their dogs' energy,
activity level and improved appearance. The dogs lost an average
of 5.2 pounds, or 6.7 percent of their body weight. In human
terms, that's the equivalent of a 130-pound woman losing nearly
nine pounds.
"We are facing an epidemic of canine obesity," said Dr. Nancy
Peters, a veterinarian from Town & Country Veterinary Hospital in
Apex, N.C. who participated in the study. "And it is largely due
to consistent owner behaviors. We mean well, but we may not be
doing what's best for our pets."
"Owners love their dogs and believe that one way to show their
affection is by constantly giving their dogs treats and/or table
scraps. Another factor in canine obesity is that few owners actually
measure their dogs' daily food allotment and end up feeding them too
much," said Dr. Peters. "And just as we need exercise, it's
important for our dogs too, but this activity often is overlooked."

Hello!:
I'm all for the airlines forbidding the flying of pets in
hot cargo holds. But given the dramatic increase in the
number of pets traveling with owners during the past five years,
I would tend to think that some bright person would see the
benefit of renovating at least a section of cargo holds so that
pets could fly safely. Half a million furry passengers is quite a
customer base. Of course, I could be hoping for the impossible.
I'm barely on speaking terms with our home hammer. How could I
possibly venture a coherent thought on cargo hold renovation? But,
still, doesn't it seem like it could be done -- sans pretty and
for a reasonable price? Just musing.. Share your thoughts at the
